چکیده

The magnification bias of large-scale structures, combined with galaxy biasing, leads to a cross-correlation of distant quasars with foreground galaxies on angular scales of the order of arc minutes and larger. The amplitude and angular shape of the cross-correlation function wQG contain information on cosmological parameters and the galaxy bias factor. While the existence of this cross-correlation has firmly been established, existing data did not allow an accurate measurement of wQG yet, but wide area surveys like the Sloan Digital Sky Survey now provide an ideal database for measuring it. However, wQG depends on several cosmological parameters and the galaxy bias factor. We study in detail the sensitivity of wQG to these parameters and develop a strategy for using the data. We show that the parameter space can be reduced to the bias factor b̄, Ω0 and σ8, and compute the accuracy with which these parameters can be deduced from SDSS data. Under reasonable assumptions, it should be possible to reach relative accuracies of the order of 5%–15% for b̄, Ω0, and σ8. This method is complementary to other weak-lensing analyses based on cosmic shear.

Environmental Effect on the Associations of Background Quasars with Foreground Objects: I. Analytic Investigation

The associations of the angular positions of background quasars with foreground galaxies, clusters of galaxies and quasars are often attributed to the statistical lensing by gravitational potentials of the matter along the lines of sight, although it has been known that none of the individual objects (galaxies, clusters or quasars) are able to fully explain the reported amplitudes of the quasar...

Self Calibration of Gravitational Shear-galaxy Intrinsic Ellipticity Correlation in Weak Lensing Surveys

The existence of non-random galaxy intrinsic ellipticity severely challenges precision cosmic shear measurement. We propose to self calibrate the induced gravitational shear-galaxy intrinsic ellipticity contamination (the GI correlation, Hirata & Seljak 2004) using extra information encoded in the same weak lensing survey. Besides the galaxy ellipticity-galaxy ellipticity correlation, the same ...

Weak gravitational lensing

We review theory and applications of weak gravitational lensing. After summarising Friedmann}Lemam( tre cosmological models, we present the formalism of gravitational lensing and light propagation in arbitrary space}times. We discuss how weak-lensing e!ects can be measured. The formalism is then applied to reconstructions of galaxy-cluster mass distributions, gravitational lensing by large-scal...

Gravitational lensing in modified Newtonian dynamics

Modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) is an alternative theory of gravity that aims to explain large-scale dynamics without recourse to any form of dark matter. However the theory is incomplete, lacking a relativistic counterpart, and so makes no definite predictions about gravitational lensing. The most obvious form that MONDian lensing might take is that photons experience twice the deflection o...

Week 7: Gravitational Lensing

According to general relativity, the trajectories of light rays can be bent by gravitational fields. Massive objects can therefore gravitationally “lens” the images of objects behind them. A cosmological examples of gravitational lensing is lensing of galaxies or quasars at redshifts z ∼ 1 by elliptical galaxies or galaxy clusters along the line of sight. If the lensing is “strong,” then there ...
